It’s that time of the year again, folks! WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) is just around the corner, and this year it’s going to be a bit different. With COVID-19 concerns still lingering, Apple has decided to go online-only for their developer conference. But don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with all the latest news and rumors.
Recent Precedent from the Competition
Before diving into what we can expect from WWDC 2020, let’s take a look at some recent precedent from the competition. Microsoft, in particular, hosted their Build conference online last year. While it was a mixed bag, CEO Satya Nadella’s presentation was straightforward and developer-focused. The event also featured celebrity video cameos, which we can expect to see again this year.
What to Expect from WWDC 2020
The opening keynote will be anchored by Tim Cook, and as always, it’ll focus on announcing new products and updates to Apple’s various operating systems. We can expect to see updates to iOS 14/iPadOS 14, macOS 10.16, watchOS, and tvOS.
iOS 14/iPadOS 14
The latest rumors suggest that we’ll get a good look at the new features in iOS 14/iPadOS 14. Some of the key updates include:
- A new automatically sortable home screen
- iPad-style multitasking on smaller screens
- New augmented reality and fitness apps
macOS 10.16
According to rumors, macOS 10.16 will be a relatively light update, with some notable features including:
- More ported iOS apps courtesy of the Catalyst program
- Developer customizable Siri
- Car Key, which allows users to unlock their car door via Apple hardware
Other Rumors and Updates
We can also expect refreshes to a couple of iPads, a long-awaited update to the HomePod, or possibly the addition of a smaller, cheaper version of the smart speaker. Augmented reality and fitness apps will likely make an appearance as well.
WWDC 2020 Schedule
The keynote kicks off on June 22nd at 10AM ET/1PM PT, with online events following for the rest of the week. It’s going to be a different experience than any year prior, but we’re excited to see what Apple has in store for us.
